What is Galician Fund for Cooperation and Solidarity

What is the Galician Fund for Cooperation and Solidarity?

The Galician Fund for Cooperation and Solidarity (Fondo) is an organization that involves the local government of 95 cities and villages, as well as 3 regional councils known as Deputacións Provinciais. In fact, this means that more than an 80% of the Galician population is represented in the Fund.

Where are we present?

Since its creation in 1997, Fondo has developed 83 projects and has invested more than 2,152,000€ in international projects of development and cooperation. Today we are present, in cooperation with local partners, in Southern and Central America, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.

What are our objectives?

Fondo was created with the aim of involving local powers in the promotion of sustainable development, the promotion of democratic values and the Global fight against poverty. We are fully committed with UN’s Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), and work in close range with communities in developing countries in order to reach them.

Local administrations are, due to their proximity to the citizen, essential in order to build a strong network of support for sustainable development. A network that we believe cannot exist without a strong support within the our local communities.

What do we do?

Fondo coordinates and combines the efforts our members put into international cooperation, in order to elaborate a common working strategy. This strategy is based on two principles:

  • The necessity to create a strong public support for MDGs. We organize seminars, conferences and exhibitions in order to create awareness about the needs of local communities in developing countries and,
  • The funding of projects of sustainable development in local communities. For the past ten years, Fondo has promoted cooperation between communities in our country and those in developing areas by supporting a growing number of projects.
